Are Bidets Actually Worth It? An Honest Look
Most people fall into one of two camps: never tried a bidet and slightly suspicious of it, or tried one once and now evangelizes to anyone who will listen. Let us settle it honestly.
The case for bidets
- They clean better. Water simply rinses better than dragging dry paper around. This is the whole pitch, and it is a good one - especially if things are ever tender, irritated, or you deal with hemorrhoids.
- They save money over time. A household can burn through a surprising amount of toilet paper. A bidet cuts that dramatically.
- They are gentler. Less wiping means less irritation. People with sensitive skin tend to notice the difference fastest.
- They are more eco-friendly. Less paper, less packaging.
The honest downsides
- The learning curve is real. The first cold spritz is a memorable experience. (Warm-water models fix this.)
- You still pat dry. A little paper or a dedicated towel is still part of the routine.
- Installation. Basic attachments take about 15 minutes and a wrench. Fancier seats need a nearby outlet.
Do you need the expensive one?
Here is the part nobody tells you: a $30-40 attachment gets you 80% of the benefit. It clips under your existing seat and connects to the water line. The premium seats (heated seat, warm water, dryer, remote) are genuinely nicer, but they are a comfort upgrade, not a different result.
Our take: start with a cheap attachment. If you love it - and most people do - upgrade to a warm-water seat later. If you do not, you are out the price of a couple pizzas.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Attachment vs. seat: attachment = cheapest, seat = most comfortable.
- Warm water: worth it if you run cold easily.
- Self-cleaning nozzle: nice to have, and honestly a little reassuring.
- Adjustable pressure: get this one. Trust us.
Bottom line
For most people, a bidet is a small, cheap upgrade that quietly improves a part of the day everyone has and nobody talks about. Start cheap, and see where it takes you.
