The Bristol Stool Chart, Explained (Finally)

If you have ever stood up, glanced down, and thought "...is that normal?" - congratulations, you are a completely normal human being. The good news is that doctors have an actual chart for this, and once you know it, you can read your own gut like a weather report.

It is called the Bristol Stool Chart, and it sorts poop into seven types, from "too hard" to "too runny," with a comfortable middle that you are aiming for.

The 7 types, quickly

  • Type 1 - Separate hard lumps. Little pellets, hard to pass. Classic sign of constipation and not enough water.
  • Type 2 - Lumpy sausage. Sausage-shaped but bumpy. Still on the constipated side.
  • Type 3 - Cracked sausage. Sausage with cracks on the surface. Totally fine - a healthy poop.
  • Type 4 - Smooth and soft. Like a smooth snake. This is the gold standard. Nicely done.
  • Type 5 - Soft blobs. Soft blobs with clear-cut edges. Slightly loose but usually nothing to worry about.
  • Type 6 - Mushy. Fluffy pieces with ragged edges. Leaning toward diarrhea.
  • Type 7 - Liquid. Watery, no solid pieces. That is diarrhea.

What you are aiming for

Types 3 and 4 are the sweet spot. Formed, soft, easy to pass, no drama. If you live there most of the time, your gut is doing great.

If you are stuck at Type 1 or 2

Hard, lumpy, pellet-style poop is almost always a hydration and fiber story:

  • Drink more water. Fiber needs water to work - dry fiber just makes things worse.
  • Add gentle fiber. Psyllium husk is the classic. Start with a small dose so your gut can adjust.
  • Move your body. A daily walk genuinely helps things move on schedule.
  • Try a squat stool. Propping your feet up straightens things out and cuts the straining.

If you are stuck at Type 6 or 7

Loose, mushy, or watery poop is usually short-lived (a bug, something you ate, stress). The main job is to replace fluids and electrolytes. If it hangs around more than a few days, check in with a doctor.

The one thing worth a doctor, not a chart

Color usually does not mean much - but black, tarry stool or visible blood is the exception. That is the one thing we would never guess about online. If you see it, skip the internet and call a professional. It is very often nothing, but it is worth a real check.
